Microsoft announces 2 new VDI Suites. And they both contain App-V !

Microsoft just announced 2 new VDI Suites, which both contain existing Microsoft products, but are licensed in a way it matches better in VDI environments. The VDI Suites are called Microsoft Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Standard Suite and Microsoft Virtual Desktop Infrastructure Premium Suite.

The Standard Suite is licensed for 21$ per device, per year, and consists of:

  • Hyper-V Server
  • System Center Virtual Machine Manager - SCVMM
  • System Center Configuration Manager - SCCM
  • System Center Operations Manager - SCOM
  • Remote Desktops Services CAL (previously called a TSCAL)
  • Microsoft Desktop Optimization Pack (MDOP and contains App-V for Windows Desktops)

The Premium Suite is licensed for around 50$, per device, per year and consists of:

  • Everything from the Standard Suite
  • Additional RDS CAL usage rights. Meaning a user can connect to a Desktop VM and to a Terminal Server simultaneously
  • Additional App-V usage rights. Meaning App-V can also be used for the Terminal Server environment

Additionaly customers do need to license their virtual desktops with Microsoft Virtual Enterprise Centralized Desktop (VECD). But that’s necessary in any VDI environment.
